Greco-Roman Documentation and Preservation in Jordan

PETRA NATIONAL TRUST (AND OTHER PARTNERS)

AN INITIATIVE TO DIGITALLY PRESERVE JORDAN'S GRECO-ROMAN SITES

In an ambitious fusion of heritage and high-tech, Petra National Trust is launching a groundbreaking initiative to digitally preserve Jordan’s iconic Greco-Roman sites— Jerash, Umm Qais, Pella, and the Amman Roman Theater.

As these ancient landmarks face mounting threats from climate change, urbanization, and environmental degradation, this project harnesses state-of-the-art drone imaging, AI-powered photogrammetry, and environmental science to capture them in stunning, high-resolution 3D detail.

These digital models will serve not only as a virtual archive for future generations, but also as vital tools for conservation planning, academic research, and immersive cultural experiences.

Going far beyond documentation, the project integrates hydrological studies to assess flood risks and build climate resilience strategies that safeguard the structural integrity of these irreplaceable sites.

Community engagement lies at the heart of the effort, with local youth trained in digital heritage technologies and cultural awareness workshops empowering residents to become active stewards of their history.

Blending innovation with cultural care, this project aims to create a scalable model for heritage preservation—one that is as forward-looking as it is rooted in history.
