The Via Appia: Rome’s Queen of Roads, from 312 BC to UNESCO
In 312 BC the Roman censor Appius Claudius Caecus — the same magistrate who built Rome’s first aqueduct, the Aqua Appia — began cutting a direct military road south to Capua, the wealthy Campanian city Rome was securing in the aftermath of the Second Samnite War. What he started became, in Statius’s later phrase, Appia longarum…regina viarum, “the Appian Way, queen of the long roads” (Silvae 2.2.12) — a title UNESCO itself borrowed in July 2024, when the road’s entire 540-kilometer corridor from Rome to Brindisi was inscribed as a World Heritage Site, Italy’s sixtieth.
The engineering was, for its time, without precedent in Italy: a cambered surface of tightly fitted, mortarless basalt paving, raised on an earthen agger where the ground was soft, carried over valleys on masonry viaducts, cut straight through hills wherever sightlines allowed, and built as a via publica — state-funded and toll-free. The road reached Beneventum, then Venusia, Tarentum, and finally Brundisium by 244 BC, a final length of roughly 366 Roman miles.
Its function never stayed fixed. It began as a military corridor for the conquest of the south; became a commercial artery moving Campanian and Apulian grain, wine, and oil north to Rome; developed, immediately outside the city, into an elite funerary boulevard, since Roman law forbade burial within the walls and the wealthy competed instead for roadside visibility; and under the Empire it carried the cursus publicus, the imperial post system, with way-stations at regular intervals. We know what that last function actually felt like because Horace traveled it in 38 BC and complained about it in writing — bad water, mosquitoes, and a sleepless night at Forum Appii in the Pontine Marshes, where travelers frequently abandoned the waterlogged road for the parallel canal and floated the last stretch by mule-towed boat (Satires 1.5).
The road’s engineering answers changed with its terrain. At Ariccia, a monumental masonry substructure built in the late second century BC still stands 230 meters long and up to 11.6 meters high, effectively an ancient overpass carrying the road across a valley (Il Cammino dell’Appia; cf. the British School at Rome’s ongoing landscape fieldwork in the area). At Terracina, the road originally climbed to the oracular Temple of Jupiter Anxur on Monte Sant’Angelo; two centuries later, Trajan’s engineers instead cut a vertical passage some 128 Roman feet through the limestone spur of Pisco Montano, re-routing the coastal road at sea level rather than deferring to the old sacred high route — Roman numeral depth-markers documenting the cut are still visible in the rock.
Further south, excavated Roman colonies preserve the road as lived urban space rather than isolated monument. At Minturnae, where the Via Appia served as the town’s decumanus maximus, a University of Pennsylvania Museum expedition under Jotham Johnson uncovered the Republican forum, seven temples, a theater, and stretches of pre-Roman and Roman fortification between 1931 and 1933 — still one of the fullest excavated cross-sections of a Via Appia colony (Johnson 1933, 1935). At Capua, the road’s original strategic destination, it ran physically beneath the Arco di Adriano into a city whose amphitheater — second in size in the Roman world only to the Colosseum — stood beside the gladiatorial school from which the Spartacus revolt broke out in 73 BC.
At Beneventum the road forks. The Arch of Trajan, dedicated in 114 AD, doesn’t commemorate a battlefield triumph in the usual sense — its sculpted panels, divided between civic-welfare scenes on the town-facing side and military conquest on the exterior, commemorate the opening of a road: Trajan’s own Via Traiana, a faster, flatter alternative to Brindisi via Aecae, Herdonia, Canusium, and Bari rather than the old detour through Venusia and Tarentum (Merrill 1901; Torelli 1997; Kleiner 1992: 224). Strabo noted the new route saved a full day’s travel once it reached the flat Apulian plain — a claim Ashby and Gardner’s landmark topographical survey of the Via Traiana traced station by station in 1916, and one recent geoarchaeological fieldwork between Beneventum and Aeclanum has now tested directly against the ground itself, refining exactly where the ancient roadbed ran through the Campanian Apennine (Ashby and Gardner 1916; Amato et al. 2026).
Not every famous name near the road was actually on it. Cannae, the site of Hannibal’s catastrophic 216 BC victory over Rome, sits close to Canusium on the Ofanto river but off the paved line of either the Appia or the Traiana — a landscape of memory reached by a short detour, not a station on the road itself, and a site where, notably, no artifacts confirmed to belong to the battle have ever been recovered, a point recent geomorphological fieldwork has used to relocate the actual killing ground rather than simply the traditional one (Mahaney 2023).
The road’s decline came with the empire’s: Late Antique warfare damaged sections, and centuries of medieval quarrying and marsh reclamation buried much of the rest, before eighteenth- and nineteenth-century antiquarian interest, twentieth-century regional protection, and now UNESCO inscription treated the Appia and the Traiana as a single connected corridor — one road, reused and re-engineered for twenty-three centuries, still queen of the long roads.
