What did ancient Rome actually look like at the height of the empire? Not as ruins or isolated monuments, but as a crowded, vibrant city filled with temples, markets, apartments, and public spaces.
Projects like Rome Reborn and Yorescape are trying to answer that question through large-scale digital reconstruction. Using archaeological evidence and historical research, they recreate imperial Rome in remarkable detail and allow modern audiences to experience the city as a complete urban environment.
Rome Reborn began as a major academic project led by digital archaeologist Bernard Frischer. The goal was ambitious: to build the most accurate 3D reconstruction possible of Rome in the early fourth century CE, during the reign of Constantine, when the city reached its largest monumental scale.
To create the reconstruction, historians, archaeologists, architects, and digital artists worked together using excavation reports, architectural studies, ancient texts, and decades of scholarship. The project eventually reconstructed more than 7,000 buildings across the city.
The reconstruction was designed to be evidence-based rather than purely imaginative. Famous landmarks like the Colosseum, the imperial fora, and major temples were modeled alongside apartment buildings, warehouses, shops, and residential districts. Researchers studied materials, building heights, decoration, and urban planning to recreate how Rome may have appeared when it was the largest city in the Mediterranean world.
The result is one of the most extensive digital reconstructions of any ancient city ever created.
More recently, platforms like Yorescape have expanded access to these reconstructions by turning them into immersive experiences. Users can move through reconstructed streets, temples, bath complexes, and forums while comparing ancient locations with the modern city.
These projects are not only visually impressive. They also help people understand aspects of Rome that are difficult to grasp from ruins alone. Visitors standing in the Roman Forum today mostly see scattered columns, broken foundations, and fragments of walls. Digital reconstruction restores the larger picture.
Buildings regain their original scale and presence, temples tower over public squares again, and basilicas return as busy civic spaces. The imperial fora reconnect into a continuous administrative center rather than a series of disconnected ruins. Residential neighborhoods and commercial districts also reappear, reminding viewers that Rome was not only an imperial capital but a functioning everyday city.
Digital archaeology also opens new possibilities for research. Scholars can test ideas about visibility, crowd movement, ceremonial processions, and the experience of moving through the ancient city. By reconstructing streets, sightlines, and building heights, researchers gain insights that are difficult to achieve through excavation alone.
For projects focused on comparing “Rome then and now,” footage from Rome Reborn offers a powerful visual tool. It helps viewers understand how surviving ruins once fit into a much larger urban landscape and how different parts of the city connected to one another.
Ultimately, Rome Reborn shows what can happen when archaeology and technology work together. Through careful research and advanced digital modeling, imperial Rome becomes visible again, as a city that can be explored, studied, and experienced in three dimensions.
